The episode was seen by an estimated 7.8 million viewers according to Nielsen Media Research. Initially, there were plans for the cast members from the British version of The Office to appear in this episode, but due to scheduling conflicts, this fell through. The first draft of the script included a scene suggesting that Angela Martin ( Angela Kinsey) was pregnant with Dwight's child, but this was cut by showrunner Greg Daniels. Toby Flenderson's ( Paul Lieberstein) interest in Pam is piqued, beginning an unrequited crush on his part. Meanwhile, Kelly Kapoor ( Mindy Kaling) sets up Pam Beesly ( Jenna Fischer) on a double date with her neighbor which goes nowhere. Michael, angry at both Jim for leaving the Scranton branch, as well as Josh for being superior to him, tries to one-up Josh at every opportunity.

The Convention" is the second episode of the third season of the American comedy television series The Office, and the show's thirtieth episode overall. Circuit City offered a bundle which included a mousepad with a picture of the cast on it. Best Buy offered "The Welcome Aboard Kit" which includes a Dundie Award, a Dwight Schrute mini-bobblehead, and a welcome aboard letter in a collector's box similar to Season 2's. Target offered a "Deluxe Edition" which has an all brown case with the Dunder Mifflin logo on it and the words "Nifty Gifty" printed on top, a shooting draft of Gay Witch Hunt and a Q&A with the cast and crew at the Museum of Television and Radio (Paley Fest). Target, Best Buy, Circuit City, and Costco outlets each offered their own exclusive special packages with the release of the Season 3 DVD.
